GUILD eyewear believes in the value and beauty of handmade things. We make custom, unique eyewear for those who care about ethically-made, elegant and one-of-a-kind objects.

Each pair is designed by local artists and is milled, tumbled, polished and assembled by hand in our studio in Toronto’s west end. We use only the highest quality materials for our frames - Mazzucchelli cellulose acetate, which is made from organic materials (cotton and wood fibres), and is 100% hypoallergenic. We make every pair with love and attention and stand by the quality of our eyewear.

Construction and Workmanship

All of our eyewear is made by hand in our Toronto studio.

We design our frames using our own in-house software optimized for the special needs of eyewear.

Our process begins with Mazzucchelli acetate. The acetate is milled and the hand scraped and sanded to remove any manufacturing marks. Nosepads are sourced from Mitsitake Matsubara in Japan, a third generation eyewear maker, and solvent-welded to the frames.

Tumbling for six days brings the glasses to a high polish. They are inspected at every stage to make sure there are no blemishes or marks that will persist though the polishing. The finish is completed with buffing to 16000 grit using Japanese buffing compounds, resulting in astonishing depth and clarity.

Bending and shaping is done by hand using mild heat. Seven-barrel hinges are hand-riveted to the frames and temples using an Italian-made Clavicus for the strongest, most traditional bond.

Finally, the frames are polished and placed in their hand-crafted leather case, also cut, engraved, and sewn in our studio.

That means we strive to be easy to deal with. Simple wholesale pricing, low minimum purchases, dedicated, down-the-street support. Any frames are available in any of the colours we offer.

Since we make each pair by hand, in Toronto, we invite you to contact us about your hard-to-fit clients. We can make any pair larger, or smaller, or with a larger or smaller bridge. Western or asian-style nosepads ensure your clients' comfort. Custom colors are a phone call away. Once you're a Guild partner, we're happy to make single pairs to help you serve your customers better.

"Our unique way of manufacturing enables us to be highly flexible – producing multiple styles in small batches, using our very own software, designed by our founder, Rod. After the designs are cut out of the eyewear material, the finishing and assembly is what takes time, as it is all hand-done."

Ryan Porter for CBC

'Frame finishes are taking a subdued turn in 2017. "Rather than having the shiny acetate or plastic we see a lot of the matte finish, which gives more of a depth to the frame," Mamdani says. "The matte finish is nice and soft on the face as well."
